paris

My fiancés parents moved to Switzerland in early 2017. While visiting, we decided to extend our trip in Europe by doing a 3 day (2 night) stop over in Paris, France. For all 3 days it was gloomy and rainy - what can you expect when you visit in December? Still, Paris had all the charm we expected. For those looking to tack on a Paris to a Switzerland trip, its about a 4 hour train ride from Zurich to Paris (6 hours total if you include the transfer).

Hotel

We stayed at le metropolitan, a tribute hotel in the 16th arrondissement. My understanding is that this is considered to be the "upper east side"of Paris. The upside of this hotel: charm, close to the effiel tower, and views. The downside: it's not close to any restaurants or shopping in downtown area. This is the view from our hotel room:

Since we only had 2 full days in Paris, we took the first day to go for a long walk around the city and hit all the major tourist points. If you're short for time, here are my top 4 'must-do' stops in Paris:

  • Champs-Elysees/Arc de Triomphe: This is Paris' "5th ave" with all the shopping/restaurants. The Arc is at the top of the avenue - you can hit two birds with one stone.

  • Louvre museum: We didn't actually go in because there was a 3 hour line but if you can make time, I hear the restaurant inside is worth it

  • Notre Dame: We were lucky enough to see the notre dame before the massive fire but should it open, its worth the stop

  • Saint Germain: I think this was my favorite region - it's a vibe

Eiffel Tower

We went to the Eiffel tower twice: once during the day and once at night to watch the lights. If the weather were nicer, we would've had a picnic in the park.

PRO TIP: *the best place to watch the Eiffel tower at night is at the Trocadero* The Trocadero is on the other side of the river but there are several restaurants you can grab dinner at before going to watch the lights. This was definitely one of the more romantic spots in the city...

EATS

Ok onto the most important part of the blog: FOOD. Here are some of the restaurants we enjoyed during our stay in Paris:

  • LE RELAIS DE L'ENTRECOTE: This place is an institution and clearly a local spot (!). They only serve "steak & frite". Don't underestimate this place - this should be at the top of your list for dinner plans.

  • LADUREE PARIS : Best known for its macaroons and hot chocolate

  • CAFE DE FLORE: This is a classic French broucherie located in Saint Germain. Good for brunch or lunch.

  • RITZ - BAR HEMINGWAY : ** Our Favorite of all the places we stopped **
